Why do I have the feeling this blog is going to hate America?

I dont think this blog is about "hating" anybody or anything. I feel that it is more about achieving equality among the students at Mizzou and across our country by making them more aware of what has happened in the past. By making them aware of the past and learning from it we can better ourselves in the future. If your comment was made in all seriousness, I feel you might have missed the point.

More interesting yet, F. Middlebush (the namesake of Middlebush hall) was integral in the now famous rejection of LLoyd Gaines' application to the UMC School of Law. Gaines was a black student who had recently graduated from Lincoln University in Jeff City. As the policy of the Missouri Law School at the time (late 1930's) was to accept only white applicants, F. Middlebush saw to it that the application was rejected. The case Missouri ex rel Gaines v. Canada (Canada was the registrar's name) arose from the dispute. Gaines dissappeared in 1939, but Middlebush got a building named after him.

While hardly models of sensitivity and enlightenment, I have to say that the comments by Brady are not nearly as explosive as what I was expecting to find when I came to this blog. These were statements made in (apparently) private letters, and were hardly out of step with conventional thought at the time (the modern civil rights movement was still decades away). The first statement, at least as quoted, is framed as a state constitutional interpretation. The second is of a kind still widely acceptable in contemporary America (sadly), though these days it would likely get a University figure in trouble.

Would I feel better about a building named after him if he didn't say such things? Of course. Are these bombshells? I don't think they are.

Even though these were common views of the times his comments show intolerance. how might his views influenced the way he treated certain students? People that discriminate (even in the past) against minorities just aren't deserving of having a building named after them in their honor.

I definately expected a more compelling argument. I don't really find it offensive that buildings would be named after people who were discriminatory in the begining half of the 20th century. I am a gay student and I am all for diversity and even ridding the world of prejudice people that are still around. But to say that we can't name buildings after them is as outrageous as saying nothing can be named after George Washington because he had slaves.

Even though people are saying "but these were common views fo the time" that in no way makes it ok or even acceptable (both back in the day and today)

As you are probably aware, homosexuality is anathma to the human condition; totally aborrant, borders on beasatiality, and can usually be cured by psychiatric treatment, for those wanting to be cured. This lifestyle is totally a CHOICE. Why anyone would support or choose this replusive behavior is worthy of examination and study....... perhaps in the Brady Commons.....

You should find a better cause to spend your time on. I agree that we should honor african americans by naming a building, but that is not is the reasoning behind the attempt to remove the name. You cannot compare 1940's and 50's to modern day. Mr. Brady's son makes a good point about changing the names of historical monuments. You have to understand the time period which this man was raised. In addition, there is a very good point made about Middlebush in another blog. So why single out Brady? Does it go along with your own agenda? Gay activist? Brady was just supporting what most in the time period believed. I would also offer that his ideals might be based on religous beliefs not on hate or discrimination.

This is not racist, this in an idea. Unfortunately, in the modern area were taught that homosexuality is common and should be a social normal. At the same time we continue an assalt on religion. Do we see a correlation? Racism is wrong no matter what time period. Not understanding homosexuality is not wrong. In many religouns, cultures and races they have problems with people being gay. I personally don't have a problem with people being Gay. If you want to be gay have fun, but understand that is not a norm. Humans and other animals are made to recreate not to have lustful sex. Now I enjoy lustful sex but I don't think that we should impose it as a norm. I understand that some people are gay they don't have a choice. We have all had friends that we thought or knew they were gay way before they ever came out. I get it. You have always been gay, not your choice. But it is my choice to not expose children to that type of behavior. If being homosexual is normal then we would all be gay and we would cease to exists becuase we would not be able to re-create. So go join the ACLU and help w/ the distruction of our society. The school obviously thought Brady deserve the honor, so let it be. Get a life.

When discussing gay and lesbian students he wrote, “…they are a menace to a student population since they seek to indoctrinate and make converts…”*
-December 7, 1949

Is this not what you are doing?

Sounds like ol Brady knew his stuff. Since my first experience at UM I have constantly seen people not looking to teach tolerance but looking to indoctrinate and to gain followers of the movement.

If we are going to remove Brady's name because he was against letting homosexuals and African-Americans into the University of Missouri do we also remove Thomas Jefferson's (a slave owner) name as well. It seems to be slippery slope.

Homosexuality is a CHOICE.... There is absolutely no proof otherwise... no gene.. no chromosone... no brain shape...

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, should we remove his statue and bench from the Quad? This was a different era and you can't force modern ideals on people 60 - 70 years previous.

Yes, all three of you get a life!
If you start this game, buildings will have numbers only. When I see the name "Kennedy" my mind travels to some very dark places.

The name will not change. Move on.

Diversity is satans last name. Homosexuals are sick people they are having lustful sex and by no means is this normal. If we were all homos and lesbians none of us would be here today. If homosexuality is normal then I guess beastiality, and the one you have sex with dead people should all be the norm and pediphiles too. Lets have all the 5and 6 year olds learn about all of this sickness so they can grow up and be insane too like the rest of all the aclu liberals trying to destroy America and its values. America will soon be ran by the taliban if they all continue with this equal right crap. There has to be rules and limits and to know right from wrong or we will all become like rabid animals. Soon the aclu will say you can't keep a murderer in jail because your prventing him his human rights per our constitution or some kind of their bullshit. America isn't even America any more its some kind of outer space country with no rules or no rights or wrongs cause aclu says everything is right so there are no wrongs. Lets all just DO IT if it feels good do it right! Even if it is murder, abortion, learning the koran or just letting all these middle eastern people come live among us cause maybe if we are nice to them they will be nice to the infidels. HA HA HA We are all so stupid!

Well this is Christina Jacobson speaking out...all you anonymous people who don't have the guts to say your peace and leave your name...get out of the kitchen if you can't take the heat! I am an african american woman and I don't want my hard earned money supporting a man who wouldn't allow me to go to this school or even think I am a full human!!!! I don't care if it was 1947 or 2006 whatever, he does not represent or uphold values of today!

I hope you realize that Mr. Brady is no longer living, and even if he was, he would receive no direct financial benefit from the University for having his name on a building. In fact, he likely would have to PAY to have his name on the building.

If anything, YOU would be benefiting from HIM.

I love how these three was so hell bent on changing things and then dropped the project as soon as the media walked away - that's REAL social justice - only doing it for the spotlight. This is why things like this don't change. No follow through.

Yeah what was REALLY funny was how the three of them refused to partner with any student of colors to look at multiple buildings on campus. The three of them, especially Erin Kennedy, were VERY racist. Erin used to date an African-American woman and would refer to her as "my nigger". The three of them used to complain about us reading each other in the LGBTQ resource center - they wanted us to follow all the WHITE rules.
